Elegant and still playful. With this platform we explored how curves can glide into straight lines, how can tree can blend with house. This remarkable specimen of a Western Red Cedar felt like it was opening its arms for us to climb into and be held. We borrowed architectural details from the clients house to incorporate into this fun little fort, creating a conversation between the structures, and a conversation starter for the neighborhood. It’s Sticks o’clock here at the Deodar platform! 🪵 🕰️ Time to kick back and relax. Certainly one of my favorite builds because we got to use so many organic shapes and let the materials guide us. A generous neighbor of a previous client had recently felled a few cedar trees and let us harvest the branches and a few trunks to make the posts and railings of this sweet hide away. Instead of applying the traditional technique of stripping the bark from the sticks using a draw knife we tried something new and blasted the bark off with a pressure washer. This left the sticks smooth and beautifully bright helping it to really POP in front of the massive Deodar Cedar it is nestled in. I love how the modern roof line accents the curves of branches and the swooping lines of the tree. If you are in the Portland area and ever have a cedar tree you need to take down we’d love to talk and give it as much of a second lease on life as possible. What do you imagine yourself doing in the platform? What a fun build this was! We got to play with lots of fun reclaimed materials on this project, old iron railing panels, log rounds, shingle scraps, fence boards etc.. Making space for the materials drive the design really makes the building process feel like a collaboration. I have a hard time throwing wood away. I like to stash every last bit of scrap material that I can fit into my shop. And I tell myself…It’s not hoarding if you use it! And this treehouse is proof! Made of almost entirely scrap material from other projects, this treehouse was a real puzzle. I love how using what you’ve got forces you to be creative. The concept behind this treehouse was “shapes”. Our client’s kids loved naming shapes and playing with the toys where you fit a shaped block through a hole so we made lots of blocks and lots of fun cut outs. There are lots of differently shaped shelves and shaped platforms. This is the kind of fun you can have when you think outside of the box…and gather your materials outside of the box stores. How many shapes can you find?? Ready for the summer slumber party! This treehouse sets the stage for lots of fun memories. Pick your entrance, a ships ladder, a rope ladder, or up the slide (we all know they are meant for that) to the screened in interior or hang out on the porch and enjoy a view. Send your sleeping bag up the pulley and set for a cozy night in the trees after you have tested your friends in feet’s of strength on the climbing holds or sent someone for an underdog on the swing. https://www.instagram.com/reel/CvLLTQCs-sF/ The ultimate hideout! This treefort is loaded with super fun features. Pop your toys in the bucket and pulley before heading up the 14” ships ladder. Haul them up and go hang out on the deck with a hidden cargo net or head inside (don’t forget to close the Dutch door behind you). Pull the a chair out of the wall and fold down the table for crafting. Close the skateboard shudders for some privacy or yell out the window for your snack delivery via trolly system from the house up above! I loved diving into the details with this Swedish cottage inspired treehouse! The two lucky recipients of this structure had the middle names Oak, and Lark so we made sure to include some references to their namesakes. One of my favorite parts of building treehouses is figuring out how to make each structure unique and personalized to the people who get to enjoy it.
